Psychometrics: Black Art to Science

Posted By arlene.m On 28th July 2010

Psychometrics have been around for Centuries, some usage is as early as 2200 BC when the Chinese Emperor tested candidates for fitness for office. However psychometrics have moved on a long way from which was first seen as a ‘black art’ to which is now seen as a ‘science’.

Common fears from the Black Art of psychometric assessments included that they were ‘gimmicky’, time-consuming, complicated to score, costly to set up and train staff, and only assessed one aspect of an individual.

However psychometrics have improved immensely, and our assessments at MindMill eradicate all these myths and focus on the science of testing instead.

Our online assessments take into account a holistic view of the candidate. We do not just assess whether a candidate has the personality for the job, we also assess whether they have the actual skills to carry out the job also, and vice versa.

Our cognitive assessments avoid dull and boring looking assessments with complicated questions that can alarm individuals, and instead we have created an online user friendly interface which is interactive, engaging, non-threatening and simple to understand.

Our personality Self-Inventory avoids the common long length that other personality assessments have, the possibility of people faking and the forcing of candidates to select an answer. Instead, MindMill Self Inventory is a short but insightful assessment that can be completed in about 5 minutes, which is easy to read and understand, candidates  have complete freedom to respond their answers and we also have a built in ‘lie detector’ that automatically brings up warnings or socially desirable or guarded responses in the report section.

We also have further assessments of biorhythms/ body clock (BANDS) and vocational guidance (JOIN) which provide more insight into an individual and correlates with our personality assessments and cognitive abilities.

Essentially we are based on science, we have spent approximately 30 years of researching our assessments, continually standardising and validating them in various continents and languages, to bring them to the standards of technical excellence they have today.

In fact, we recently completed a presentation at a Hallmark event, demonstrating how assessments were once seen as a black art, but we at MindMill remove the black art and focus on the science.
