Professor Sidney Irvine has been one of the leading authors who developed item-generation theory, a major application used in the construction of cognitive assessments. In fact, this theory is an intellectual contribution to test development that is unique, with great potential for changing the ways tests are generated. Professor Irvine developed a range of online cognitive assessments based on item generation theory, for clients who wanted modern tests capable of lasting well into the millennium.
Content was to be visibly related to work and learning components such as perceptual scanning, literacy, numeracy and following instructions from memory. For longer term predictions reasoning tasks using icons and verbal directions were developed.
MindMill Censeo Cognitive Abilities measure a wide range of work aptitudes based on natural basic ability as opposed to academic ability. Assessments include;
- Basic Literacy Skills
- Basic Numeracy Skills
- Error Detection (and perceptual scanning speed)
- Lower and Higher Levels Assessments of Reasoning Ability
- Spatial Awareness and Logic Skills
- Working Memory Assessments
Because not all of these skills and aptitudes are necessary for every occupation, one may be selective in the measurement of those that are proven relevant for particular job families, ensuring the right skills and aptitudes are being assessed and fully tailored to fulfil organisational needs.
The online capabilities of these assessments are immense including instant results, warning signs for guessing, instant reports, easily updated norms, multiple parallel forms, retest norms, interchangeable time limits for each assessment and so on.
A further advantage is the assessments capability to measure trainability of candidates which is known as the Capacity to Process Information (CPI). CPI is a fundamental building block in the rate of learning NEW skills on the job or success in initial training. As a result MindMill can predict how quickly someone will train while in a new job role. Further advantages include creating groups for training in terms of how quickly they will learn, for example, to put individuals into a group for training were they will learn at the same pace as others.
