It was recently reported by The Guardian that UK employers are receiving on average 70 applications for every vacancy posted. The task of filtering these applications down to a suitable number for face-to-face interviewing candidates can be colossal!

Firstly, CV’s or application forms must be read and candidates who do not meet the minimum criteria required dismissed. Then the remaining candidates’ applications must be studied to verify that the application is an accurate representation of the candidate; a recruiter must look for gaps in dates, unfinished degrees, inconsistencies in stories, multiple jobs in a short period of time, movement between jobs for negative reasons etc. The applicant must be given the chance to confirm or deny any queries in accordance with UK Employment law. That could be quite a few phonecalls to make! Then, the person overseeing this task will probably devise some sort of scoring system to assess the final cut of candidates suitability to the criteria outlined for the role before the survivors will be invited to interview.

This whole process could take days, and it sounds to me like you would need to be a detective rather than an HR person!
